Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert George “Blondie” Hasler 1914-1987 DSO OBE

Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert George “Blondie” Hasler credited and distinguished for setting up what became the SBS. He was the leader and planner for Operation Frankton. The operation was to attack the french port of Bordeaux where German shipping was based. They went in by submarine and then canoe. The submarine would not be able to bring them back they would have to try and make their way back through spain.

They had trained at Lumps Fort, being one of the Palmerston sea forts off the coast of Portsmouth.

The Operation its significance and details are well documented, it took place on the 7th December 1942.
