It holds the world’s largest Shakespeare collection and is a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period 1500-1750.

They use their archived material to explore many facets of life in this period, an upcoming exhibition, Open City, explores how London emerged from two hundred years of catastrophic events between 1500 and 1700.

It explores three areas of community life in the city, theatres, markets and churches, to see how it’s people emerged from plague, fire, civil war, regicide, religious turmoil and much more, to become centre stage, a world leading city.

This is fascinating and important material for historians in this country and the digital image collection is very impressive.
