In the early part of 1939, war with Germany looked increasingly likely and by April the Government had passed the Military Training Act.

Men aged between 20 and 22 years of age could be expected to be called up for six months military training.

With war being declared in September 1939 there was only one call up.

This was the first ever peacetime conscription in Britain
