Another intriguing snippet on the Volunteer Regiments.
Having found this engraving after John Leech c1860 which just serves to remind us that these regiments, raised by county leiutenants, to protect us in case of invasion, were little more than private clubs and as such the ‘soldiers’ had to provide their own uniforms and weapons.
Their members were generally from the better off classes and would dress with some flair, which must have caused some consternation amongst the regular soldiers who led them!
