William Golding and his wife had moved back to Cornwall to spend his final years with his wife Ann, now Sir William and lady Golding.
- Early on the morning of 19 June 1993 he died of heart failure having believed to have had a heavy drinking session
- Five days later, on Midsummer’s Day, he was buried in the churchyard at Bowerchalke.
- In November Golding was remembered at a memorial service in Salisbury Cathedral.
