A cache of maps showing fluctuations in Arctic sea ice from 1893 – 1961 reveal how very important mapping geological, meteorological or other scientific data has been historically.

These maps, produced by the Danish Meteorological Institute, remind us how important tracking the extent of the ice fields has been historically, not just in terms of scientific interest but for shipping and trade.
